Nota de escopo: Ausencia de susceptibilidad a una infección en un gran grupo de individuos de una población. Diversos factores pueden ser responsables de la inmunidad de grupo, lo que da lugar a diferentes definiciones utilizadas en la literatura. Lo más frecuente es que el término inmunidad de grupo hace referencia al caso en que, si la mayor parte de la población es inmune, la infección de un único individuo no da origen a una epidemia. Igualmente, en tales poblaciones inmunizadas, no es probable que los individuos susceptibles se lleguen a infectar. La inmunidad de grupo también puede hacer referencia al caso en que los individuos no protegidos no llegan a contraer una enfermedad porque el organismo infeccioso ha sido eliminado de la población.

A variety of factors can be responsible for herd immunity and this gives rise to the different definitions used in the literature. Most commonly, herd immunity refers to the case when, if most of the population is immune, infection of a single individual will not cause an epidemic. Also, in such immunized populations, susceptible individuals are not likely to become infected. Herd immunity can also refer to the case when unprotected individuals fail to contract a disease because the infecting organism has been banished from the population.
