Nota de escopo: Enfermedad protozoaria causada en los seres humanos por cuatro especies del género PLASMODIUM: P. falciparum (MALARIA FALCIPARUM), P. vivax (MALARIA VIVAX), P. ovale y P. malariae, que se trasmiten por la picadura de un mosquito hembra infectado del género Anopheles. La malaria es endémica en zonas de Asia, África, Centroamérica, Sudamérica, Oceanía y ciertas islas del Caribe. Se caracteriza por cansancio extremo asociado a crisis de FIEBRE alta, SUDORACIÓN, ESCALOFRÍOS, temblores y ANEMIA. En los ANIMALES, la malaria la causan otras especies del género Plasmodium.

Malaria is endemic in parts of Asia, Africa, Central and South America, Oceania, and certain Caribbean islands. It is characterized by extreme exhaustion associated with paroxysms of high FEVER; SWEATING; shaking CHILLS; and ANEMIA. Malaria in ANIMALS is caused by other species of plasmodia.
