Scope note: Género de tritones acuáticos que pertenecen a la familia Salamandridae y que algunas veces se les llama tritones espinosos. Hay dos especies P. waltlii y P. poireti. El P. waltlii se utiliza comúnmente en laboratorio. Dado que este género se adapta a la vida en acuarios, es fácil de mantener en laboratorios.
