Scope note: Especie tipo de HERPESVIRUS que causa la mayoría de las formas de herpes simple no genital en el hombre. La infección primaria ocurre principalmente en lactantes y niños pequeños y posteriormente el virus queda latente en los ganglios de las raíces dorsales. A continuación, se reactiva periódicamente, a lo largo de la vida, ocasionando afecciones fundamentalmente benignas.
