Scope note: Afección grave resultante de la invasión bacteriana del músculo sano a partir de un músculo adyacente traumatizado o de tejidos blandos. La infección se origina en una herida contaminada con bacterias del género CLOSTRIDIUM. C. perfringens explica la mayoría de los casos (más de ochenta por ciento), en tanto el C. noyvi, C. septicum, y C. histolyticum causa la mayoría de los otros casos.

The infection originates in a wound contaminated with bacteria of the genus CLOSTRIDIUM. C. perfringens accounts for the majority of cases (over eighty percent), while C. noyvi, C. septicum, and C. histolyticum cause most of the other cases.
Annotation: usually caused by Clostridium perfringens but all C. perfringens infections need not be gas gangrene
