Nota de alcance: Sistema de cisternas del CITOPLASMA de muchas células. A veces, el retículo endoplásmico es continuación de la membrana plasmática (MEMBRANA CELULAR) o de la cubierta externa de la membrana nuclear. Si las superficies externas de las membranas del retículo endoplásmico están cubiertas con ribosomas, se dice que el retículo endoplásmico presenta una superficie rugosa (RETÍCULO ENDOPLÁSMICO RUGOSO); si no es así se le denomina de superficie lisa (RETÍCULO ENDOPLÁSMICO LISO). In places the endoplasmic reticulum is continuous with the plasma membrane (CELL MEMBRANE) or outer membrane of the nuclear envelope. If the outer surfaces of the endoplasmic reticulum membranes are coated with ribosomes, the endoplasmic reticulum is said to be rough-surfaced (ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM, ROUGH); otherwise it is said to be smooth-surfaced (ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM, SMOOTH).
