Nota de escopo: Base púrica que se encuentra en la mayor parte de los tejidos y líquidos corporales, los cálculos urinarios y ciertas plantas. Es un intermediario en la degradación de adenosinmonofosfato a ácido úrico, formándose por oxidación de la hipoxantina. Los tres derivados de la xantina empleados más a menudo en medicina por sus efectos broncodilatadores son la cafeína, la teobromina y la teofilina y sus derivados. (Dorland, 28a ed)
