Omics sciences
When navigating the hierarchy under the descriptor Genomics, one finds a set of descriptors that have something in common: the suffix -omics.
The suffix -omics is often used to describe something complete and refers to a field of study in the biological sciences that deals with information from large-scale data.
The first term to appear in the literature was Genomics, in 1986, to refer to the area of systematic study of the Genome of organisms. To represent the association with the word genome, the suffix -omics was supposedly coined.
Building on the same reasoning, in 1995, the term Proteomics was introduced to describe the complete set of proteins in an organism. Subsequently, other fields of study were likely named in a similar manner.
