Scope note: Enfermedad infecciosa causada por espiroquetas, BORRELIA BURGDORFERI, que es transmitida fundamentalmente por Ixodes dammini (ver IXODES) y por las garrapatas Ixodes pacificus en los Estados Unidos y por Ixodes ricinis (ver IXODES) en Europa. Clínicamente se manifiesta por afectación cutánea precoz y tardía, y por la participación del sistema nervioso, el corazón, los ojos y las articulaciones en combinaciones variables. Esta enfermedad, descubierta por primera vez en Old Lyme (Connecticut), se conocía anteriormente como artritis de Lyme.

Scope note: An infectious disease caused by a spirochete, BORRELIA BURGDORFERI, which is transmitted chiefly by Ixodes dammini (see IXODES) and pacificus ticks in the United States and Ixodes ricinis (see IXODES) in Europe. It is a disease with early and late cutaneous manifestations plus involvement of the nervous system, heart, eye, and joints in variable combinations. The disease was formerly known as Lyme arthritis and first discovered at Old Lyme, Connecticut.
