Scope note: Suborden de protozoos parasitarios monoflagelados que viven en la sangre y los tejidos de seres humanos y animales. Entre los géneros representativos se encuentran: Blastocrithidia, Leptomonas, CRITHIDIA, Herpetomonas, LEISHMANIA, Phytomonas y TRYPANOSOMA. Las especies de este suborden pueden existir en dos o más estados morfológicos, denominados antiguamente tras el género que ejemplificaba a estas formas: amastigoto (LEISHMANIA), coanomastigoto (CRITHIDIA), promastigoto (Leptomonas), opistomastigoto (Herpetomonas), epimastigoto (Blastocrithidia) y tripomastigoto (TRYPANOSOMA).

Representative genera include: Blastocrithidia, Leptomonas, CRITHIDIA, Herpetomonas, LEISHMANIA, Phytomonas, and TRYPANOSOMA.
