Pueden ser fermentadores clásicos, sistemas de perfusión de cultivos celulares o biorreactores de enzimas. Para la síntesis de proteínas o enzimas se utilizan, por lo general, microorganismos recombinantes como bacterias, células de mamíferos o células de insectos o de vegetales.
