Fue descubierta por Abel Tasman en 1643 y visitada por el Capitán Cook en 1774. Fue utilizada por convictos fugados de Australia ya en el año 1804. Gran Bretaña la anexionó en 1874, pero consiguió la independencia en 1970. El nombre Fiji es de origen incierto. En su forma actual puede representar el de Viti, la principal isla del grupo.
