Scope note: Sustancias químicas que tienen un efecto regulador específico de la actividad de determinados órganos. El término se aplicó originalmente a las sustancias segregadas por diversas GLÁNDULAS ENDOCRINAS y transportadas a través del torrente sanguíneo hacia los órganos en los que actúan. En ocasiones esta definición abarca también aquellas sustancias que, sin ser producidas por las glándulas endocrinas, tienen efectos similares.
