Nota de alcance: Clase de fármacos que producen efectos fisiológicos y psicológicos a través de diversos mecanismos. Pueden dividirse en fármacos específicos -- por ejemplo, los que afectan a un solo mecanismo molecular identificable para actuar en las células que poseen receptores de dicho fármaco -- y en fármacos inespecíficos, que son aquellos que producen efectos en diferentes tipos de células y que actúan mediante diversos mecanismos moleculares. Los que tienen mecanismos inespecíficos se clasifican generalmente según sus efectos de depresión o estimulación conductual. Los fármacos con mecanismos específicos se clasifican por el lugar de acción o por el uso terapéutico específico. Nota de alcance: A class of drugs producing both physiological and psychological effects through a variety of mechanisms. They can be divided into "specific" agents, e.g., affecting an identifiable molecular mechanism unique to target cells bearing receptors for that agent, and "nonspecific" agents, those producing effects on different target cells and acting by diverse molecular mechanisms. Those with nonspecific mechanisms are generally further classed according to whether they produce behavioral depression or stimulation.
