Note d'application:	República situada en el norte de América del Sur, limitada al oeste por GUYANA (Guayana Británica) y al este por la GUAYANA FRANCESA. Su capital es Paramaribo. Antiguamente se llamaba Guayana Neerlandesa o Guayana Holandesa. Primero fue poblada por los ingleses en 1651, pero fue cedida a los holandeses mediante tratado en 1667. Se convirtió en territorio autónomo bajo la corona holandesa en 1954 y obtuvo la independencia en 1975. El país recibió el nombre del río Surinam, pero el significado de ese nombre es incierto. A republic in the north of South America, bordered on the west by GUYANA (British Guiana) and on the east by FRENCH GUIANA. Its capital is Paramaribo. It was formerly called Netherlands Guiana or Dutch Guiana or Surinam. Suriname was first settled by the English in 1651 but was ceded to the Dutch by treaty in 1667. It became an autonomous territory under the Dutch crown in 1954 and gained independence in 1975. The country was named for the Surinam River but the meaning of that name is uncertain.
