Reino en el Himalaya oriental, en la frontera nordeste de la India, limitado al norte por el Tibet, al este por Assam, al sur por Assam y Bengala Occidental y al oeste por Sikkim y Tibet. De 1720 a 1970 estuvo bajo dominación china o india. En 1971 se convirtió en miembro de las Naciones Unidas. El nombre proviene del sánscrito bhota, el nombre del Tibet, + anta, fin, en referencia a su ubicación en el extremo sur del Tibet.
