Note d'application:	Todos los organismos que viven en el fondo marino, ya sea en la superficie del mismo (epibentos) o bien enterrados en el sedimento (endobentos). Pueden ser vegetales (fitobentos) o animales (zoobentos); macroscópicos (megalobentos, macrobentos), de tamaño medio (meiobentos) o microscópicos (microbentos). El bentos es particularmente importante en las productivas aguas costeras, donde el fitobentos recibe suficiente luz para desarrollarse y alimentar densas poblaciones de zoobentos.
