Note d'application: Se utiliza para completar la eliminación de contaminantes no suficientemente reducidos en el nivel secundario de tratamiento y/o la eliminación de compuestos no biodegradables, de nutrientes, de contaminantes tóxicos y/o específicos, de metales pesados, de sólidos inorgánicos disueltos y sólidos en suspensión remanentes, y de microorganismos patógenos. Sólo en condiciones muy específicas en el tratamiento de aguas residuales domésticas, o cuando se pretende utilizar el efluente del tratamiento en algunas de las formas de reutilización de agua, el grado de eficiencia terciaria es exigido. El nivel terciario podrá ser obtenido por medio de la combinación entre algunos de los procesos descritos en el nivel secundario, cuando se desea la reducción complementaria de materia orgánica, de nutrientes y de microorganismos. Sin embargo, lo más común es que las unidades descritas en el grado secundario de tratamiento biológico se complementen con otras tecnologías de tratamiento para alcanzar el nivel terciario.
