Las alas, cuando existen, son dos, lo que distingue al género Diptera de las llamadas moscas, en tanto que los halterios, o alas posteriores reducidas, separan el género Diptera de otros insectos con un par de alas. El orden incluye las familias Calliphoridae, Oestridae, Phoridae, Sarcophagidae, Scatophagidae, Sciaridae, SIMULIIDAE, Tabanidae, Therevidae, Trypetidae, CERATOPOGONIDAE, CHIRONOMIDAE, CULICIDAE, DROSOPHILIDAE, GLOSSINIDAE, MUSCIDAE, TEPHRITIDAE y PSYCHODIDAE. Las formas larvarias de la especie Diptera se denominan gusanos (ver LARVA).
