La teoria de la performatividad de género sustenta que la orientación sexual, la identidad sexual y la expresión de género, son el resultado de una construcción-producción social, histórica y cultural, y por lo tanto no existen papeles sexuales o roles de género que estén esencial o biológicamente inscritos en la naturaleza humana. En otras palabras, en términos de lo humano, la única naturaleza es la cultura, o mejor, la diversidad y pluralidad de culturas. Las categorías dicotómicas de "femenino", "masculino", "heterosexual" y "homosexual" se pueden entender como repetición de actos performativos en lugar de valores naturales, innatos. A theory that sustains that sexual orientation, sexual identity and gender expression are the results of social, historical and cultural constructions and, therefore, there are no sexual roles or gender roles that are essentially or biologically inscribed in human nature.
