Fue descubierta por los portugueses en 1505, ocupada por los holandeses en 1598-1710, en posesión de los franceses entre 1715 y 1810 cuando fue capturada por los británicos, cedida formalmente a los británicos en 1814 y convertida en independiente en 1968. El nombre fue dado por los holandeses en honor de Mauricio de Nassau, Príncipe de Orange (1567-1625). It was discovered by the Portuguese in 1505, occupied by the Dutch 1598-1710, held by the French 1715-1810 when the British captured it, formally ceded to the British in 1814, and became independent in 1968.
