Colonizada en 1840 por la New Zealand Company, se convirtió en colonia de la corona británica en 1840 hasta 1907 en que terminó el estado colonial. Nueva Zelanda es una forma parcialmente anglicanizada del nombre original holandés Nieuw Zeeland, nueva tierra marina, posiblemente en referencia a la provincia holandesa de Zeeland.
