El territorio fue otorgado en 1621 por Jacobo I al escocés Sir William Alexander y recibió la denominación de Nova Scotia, Nueva Escocia en latín. Anteriormente el territorio había pertenecido a los franceses bajo la denominación de Acadia. The territory was granted in 1621 by James I to the Scotsman Sir William Alexander and was called Nova Scotia, the Latin for New Scotland.
