Scope note: Enfermedad infecciosa aguda causada por YERSINIA PESTIS que afecta a humanos, a roedores salvajes y a sus ectoparásitos (pulgas).Ha sido una de las causas de las grandes epidemias que periódicamente ha sufrido la humanidad (en la epidemia llamada "muerte negra" del siglo XIV fallecieron más de 25 millones de personas); en la actualidad está catalogada como una de las enfemredades cuarentenables. La enfermedad humana puede presentarse según tres modalidades: la peste bubónica, la forma septicémica y la forma pulmonar. La peste bubónica es la forma más común.
