Scope note: Género de protozoos que comprende los parásitos de la malaria de los mamíferos. Hay cuatro especies que infectan a los seres humanos (aunque también pueden producirse infecciones esporádicas por malaria de primates), a saber: PLASMODIUM FALCIPARUM, PLASMODIUM MALARIAE, PLASMODIUM OVALE, y PLASMODIUM VIVAX. Las especies que producen la infección en vertebrados no humanos son: PLASMODIUM BERGHEI, PLASMODIUM CHABAUDI, P. vinckei y PLASMODIUM YOELII en roedores; P. brasilianum, PLASMODIUM CYNOMOLGI y PLASMODIUM KNOWLESI en monos; y PLASMODIUM GALLINACEUM en pollos.
