Scope note: Carnívoros del género Procyon, de la familia Procyonidae. En la actualidad se reconocen dos subgéneros y siete especies. Se distribuyen desde el sur de Canadá a Panamá y se encuentran en varias islas del Caribe. Dado su valor comercial, una especie (P. lotor) fue introducida en Francia, Países Bajos, Alemania y la Unión Soviética, aunque hoy en día se considera un problema en Europa.
