Scope note: Estructura larga casi cilíndrica, alojada en el conducto vertebral y que se extiende desde el agujero magno en la base del cráneo hasta la parte superior de la región lumbar. Componente del sistema nervioso central, la médula del adulto tiene un diámetro aproximado de 1 cm y una longitud media de 42 a 45 cm. La médula conduce impulsos desde y hacia el encéfalo, y controla numerosos reflejos. Tiene un núcleo central de sustancia gris formado principalmente por células nerviosas, y está rodeada por tres membranas meníngeas protectoras: duramadre, aracnoides y piamadre. La médula es una prolongación del bulbo raquídeo y termina cerca de la tercera vértebra lumbar. (Diccionario Mosby. 5a ed. Madrid: Harcourt España, 2000, p.795)
