Scope note: Especie de bacterias cocoides grampositivas que se aíslan de lesiones cutáneas, sangre, exudados inflamatorios y vías respiratorias altas de los seres humanos. Es un estreptococo hemolítico del grupo A que puede causar ESCARLATINA y FIEBRE REUMÁTICA. A diferencia de las cepas que no son virulentas (que producen faringitis estreptocócica), las cepas virulentas penetran profundamente en el organismo, con resultados catastróficos. Se ha demostrado que las infecciones invasivas por estreptococos A pueden producir el síndrome de choque tóxico, pueden dañar los músculos (MIOSITIS) o destruir las fascias que los recubren (FASCITIS NECROTIZANTE).
