Scope note: Especie de bacterias cocoides grampositivas que se aíslan de abscesos de las glándulas submaxilares y de las secreciones mucopurulentas de las vías respiratorias altas de los caballos. Este microorganismo pertenece al grupo C de los estreptococos, en lo que se refiere a su respuesta antigénica, y produce asfixia. La subespecie S. zooepidemicus se considera también patógena para los caballos.
