Scope note: República situada en el norte de América del Sur, limitada al oeste por GUYANA (Guayana Británica) y al este por la GUAYANA FRANCESA. Su capital es Paramaribo. Antiguamente se llamaba Guayana Neerlandesa o Guayana Holandesa. Primero fue poblada por los ingleses en 1651, pero fue cedida a los holandeses mediante tratado en 1667. Se convirtió en territorio autónomo bajo la corona holandesa en 1954 y obtuvo la independencia en 1975. El país recibió el nombre del río Surinam, pero el significado de ese nombre es incierto.
