Scope note: Una de las numerosas estructuras dentales que se desarrollan en los maxilares como parte del aparato digestivo y que se utilizan para cortar, picar y procesar los alimentos en la boca para su posterior ingestión. Cada diente está formado por una corona que se proyecta por encima delas encías; dos a cuatro raíces, incluidas en los alveolos, y un cuello que se extiende entre la corona y la raíz. Cada diente contiene una cavidad llena de pulpa muy rica en vasos sanguíneos y nervios que entran en la cavidad a través de un pequeño orificio situado en la punta de cada raíz. La porción sólida del diente está formada por dentina, esmalte y una fina capa de hueso en la superficie de la raíz. (Diccionario Mosby. 5a ed. Madrid: Harcourt España, 2000, p.372)
