Scope note: Compuesto de biguanida con escasa actividad antimalárica hasta que es metabolizada en el organismo dando lugar al agente antimalárico efectivo cicloguanil. La utilidad del proguanil es limitada por el rápido desarrollo de resistencia del parásito de la malaria. El clorhidrato se utiliza para la profilaxis ocasional de la malaria falciparum, para inhibir otras formas de malaria y para reducir la transmisión de la infección.
