Scope note: Virus de inmunodeficiencia humana. Un término no taxonómico e histórico que se refiere a cualquiera de dos especies, específicamente el VIH-1 y/o VIH-2. Hasta el año 1986 se denominó virus linfotrópico T tipo III/virus asociado a linfadenopatía (HTLV-III/LAV). A partir de 1986-1990, existió una especie oficial denominada HIV. A partir de 1991, el termino HIV no se volvió a considerar como nombre oficial de las especies, quedando denominadas ambas especies como HIV-1 y HIV-2.
