Estas bacterias metanógenas se encuentran en cualquier medio ambiente anaerobio, incluidos los sedimentos acuáticos, digestores anaerobios de aguas residuales y tracto gastrointestinal. Hay cuatro géneros: METHANOSARCINA, Methanolobus, Methanothrix y Methanococcoides.
