Scope note: País situado en la parte oriental de Europa, antiguamente la provincia de Bosnia de Yugoslavia, que se unió con la provincia de Herzegovina para formar la República de Bosnia y Herzegovina en 1946. Fue creada el 7 de abril de 1992 como consecuencia de la división de Yugoslavia y reconocida por los Estados Unidos como estado independiente. Bosnia toma su nombre del rio Bosna, a su vez de la raíz indoeuropea bhog "corriente". El nombre de Herzegovina proviene del servio herceg (duque) + -ov (posesivo) + - ina (país o territorio).
