Scope note: República situada en el sudeste asiático, al noroeste de Tailandia, a la que se conoció como Birmania durante mucho tiempo. Su capital es Yangon, antiguamente denominada Rangún. Habitada por gente de raza mongol y probablemente de origen tibetano, en el siglo III d.C. fue poblada por los hindúes. El moderno estado birmano fue fundado en el siglo XVIII, pero estuvo en conflicto con los británicos durante el siglo XIX. En 1937 se convirtió en colonia de la corona de Gran Bretaña y se le concedió la independencia en 1947. En 1989 se convirtió en Myanmar.
