En esta región se originan los sistemas dopaminérgicos mesocortical y mesolímbico, incluida una importante proyección al NÚCLEO ACCUMBENS. Se sospecha que la sobreactividad de las células de este área contribuye a los síntomas positivos de la ESQUIZOFRENIA.
