Scope note: Género de serpientes de la familia VIPERIDAE. Se distribuye en el oeste de Pakistán, la mayor parte de la India, Birmania, Ceilán, Tailandia, el sureste de China, Taiwán y algunas islas de Indonesia. Silban muy alto cuando se las molesta y atacan con gran fuerza y velocidad. Son muy prolíficas: procrean entre 20 y 60 crías. DABOIA es la principal causa de mordedura de serpiente en la India y Birmania. (Moore: Poisonous Snakes of the World, 1980, p. 127).
