Scope note: Género de Viperinae que se encuentra principalmente en África, Arabia e India con una característica escama córnea sobre cada ojo. El género Cerastes incluye la víbora de las arenas del Sahara (Cerastes vipera) y la víbora cornuda del desierto (Cerastes cerastes). Un crótalo del desierto, Crotalus cerastes, también tiene escamas córneas sobre los ojos, pero es una especie de la subfamilia hermana Crotalinae y se encuentra en el desierto del suroeste de Estados Unidos.
