Scope note: Parásitos hemoflagelados del subgénero Leishmania leishmania que infectan al hombre y a los animales y producen la leishmaniosis visceral (LEISHMANIASIS VISCERAL). Las infecciones humanas están limitadas casi exclusivamente a los niños. Este parásito se suele encontrar en los perros, otros Canidae, y en el puerco espín, y el hombre es considerado sólo un huésped accidental. La transmisión se realiza por el mosquito Phlebotomus.
