Scope note: Organizaciones voluntarias que apoyan los programas educativos y las investigaciones en psiquiatría con el objetivo de promover la salud mental. Previamente en los Estados Unidos existía una asociación conocida como National Committee for Mental Hygiene que se fundó en 1909; la misma se convirtió en Mental Health Association en 1976 y luego en National Mental Health Association en 1980. Las asociaciones de salud mental estatales y locales en este país son garantizadas por la organización nacional y se afilian a ella.
