Scope note: Área del sistema afectable (población y entorno) que por el impacto de una calamidad de origen natural o humano, sufre daños, fallas y deterioro en su estructura y funcionamiento normal. La extensión de la zona de desastre puede ser diversa, por ejemplo, un barrio, una colonia, un pueblo, una ciudad o una región; varia de acuerdo con diferentes factores, entre ellos: el tipo de calamidad, la fuerza de ésta y su duración, la vulnerabilidad del sistema afectable, etcétera.
