Fue colonizada por los fenicios y los antiguos griegos y gobernada de modo sucesivo por los Imperios de Asiria, Persia, Ptolomeo, Roma y Bizancio. Estuvo bajo diversos países desde el siglo XII al siglo XX pero se convirtió en independiente en 1960. El nombre proviene del griego Kupros, que probablemente representaba el kabar o gabar sumerio, cobre, famosa en los tiempos históricos por las minas de cobre.
