Scope note: Familia de plantas del orden Violales, subclase Dilleniidae, clase Magnoliopsida que crecen en regiones templadas y se presenta en forma de cepas, arbustos o árboles herbáceos o leñosos. Muchas de ellas poseen sarmientos en los tallos de las hojas. Las hojas son alternantes. Sus flores tienen 3-5 sépalos, pétalos y estambres. Casi todas las especies poseen semillas que muestran una excrescencia carnosa denominada arilo.
