Scope note: Forma de encefalitis por arbovirus endémica en América Central y en las zonas más septentrionales de América del Sur. El organismo causal, el VIRUS DE LA ENCEFALITIS EQUINA VENEZOLANA, es transmitido a los seres humanos y a los caballos a través de la picadura de varias especies de mosquitos. La infección vírica humana puede ser asintomática o limitarse a una enfermedad seudogripal leve. La encefalitis, que no suele ser grave, se produce en un bajo porcentaje de casos y puede ocasionar CONVULSIONES y COMA. (Joynt, Clinical Neurology, 1996, Ch. 26, pp. 9-10)

The causative organism (ENCEPHALITIS VIRUS, VENEZUELAN EQUINE) is transmitted to humans and horses via the bite of several mosquito species. Human viral infection may be asymptomatic or remain restricted to a mild influenza-like illness.
