Su desarrollo inicial fue entorpecido por la presencia de una colonia penal. El nombre del país y de la capital son variantes de Guayana, posiblemente del guaraní indio nativo guai (nacido) + ana (pariente) aludiendo a una raza de personas unidas e interrelacionadas.
