Fue descubierta por el Capitán Cook en 1774 y visitada por diversos navegantes, exploradores y comerciantes desde 1792 a 1840. Ocupada por los franceses en 1853, fue erigida como colonia penal en 1864-94. En 1946 fue convertida en territorio francés de ultramar. Fue nombrada por el capitán Cook con el nombre latino de Escocia en los siglos V y VI de nuestra era, Caledonia.
