Descubierta en 1494 por Colón, fue colonia española entre 1509 y 1655, hasta que la capturaron los ingleses. Su floreciente comercio de esclavos se abolió en el siglo XIX. Entre los años 1655 y 1958 fue colonia británica y entre 1958 y 1962 territorio de la Federación de las Indias Occidentales. Obtuvo su total independencia en 1962. Su nombre procede de Arawak Xaymaca, que significa rico en cascadas o tierra de cascadas.
