Scope note: Género de la subfamilia CERCOPITHECINAE, familia CERCOPITHECIDAE, que se compone de siete especies llamadas: P. ursinus (babuino chacma), P. cynocephalus (babuino amarillo), P. papio (babuino occidental o de Guinea), P. anubis (babuino anubis u olivo), P. hamadryas (babuino hamadryas o sagrado), P. sphinx (mandril), y P. leucophaeus (drill, mono de África más pequeño que el mandril). Algunos autores han reconocido un género separado para el drill y el mandril: Mandrillus. El género Papio está geográficamente distribuido a lo largo del este y el oeste de África, Arabia, Egipto y Sudán.
