Este término no es taxonómico y se refiere al modo de vida (utilización de la ENERGÍA y motilidad) y no a un determinado tipo de organismo. La mayoría de ellos, aunque no todos, son ALGAS unicelulares. Los grupos más importantes son: DIATOMEAS, DINOFLAGELLIDA, CYANOBACTERIA, CHLOROPHYTA, HAPTOPHYTA, CRYPTOPHYTA y silicoflagelados.
